The 2007 Annual General Meeting, was held at Rawdon Conservative Club, 24 Leeds Road, Rawdon, Leeds, LS19 6NL (Tel: 0113 2592475), commencing at 8.0 pm. Refreshments were generously provided by the Rawdon Club. The club is situated opposite Over Lane (Town street) at its junction with the A65, Leeds-Ilkley Road. A location map is shown opposite. The club is on the left hand side of the road travelling in the Leeds-Ilkley direction, and has a large car park at the rear.

The AGM is a short formal meeting to present the accounts of the YRCCC, and to elect its officers for the next 12 months. The Chairman and one other officer represent the Yorkshire Region on the Council of the Association of Conservative Clubs (ACC). The Yorkshire Region Council, in conjunction with the ACC, provides support for Conservative Clubs in the Region by way of organising an annual management conference, 3 meetings with presentations for clubs during the year, and offering advice and assistance to clubs whenever they request it. These activities are funded by donations from the various recommended suppliers and the ACC.

The elected officers (and their current incumbents) are:

  • Chairman (Derek Gamble)
  • Deputy Chairman (Paul Kitchingman)
  • Secretary (John Tempest)
  • Treasurer (Brian Shannon)
  • Area Chairman North (vacant)
  • Area Chairman South (Sir Irvine Patnick OBE)
  • Area Chairman West (Colin Hustler)

The YRCCC can also co-opt additional members to assist in its activities. The current co-opted members are: Frank Donoghue.

The AGM Agenda was as follows:

  • Chairman's Report for the Year
  • Treasurer's Report for the Year Ending January 31st 2007
  • Election of Officers

Presentation by Malcom Symes, Inco UK
After the formal business of the AGM, Malcolm Symes of Inco UK [providers of door entry systems, tills, closed circuit TV surveillance systems and other security systems] will give a presentation on Contracts and Leases and provide tips on how to avoid getting stung by clauses which make it difficult to terminate Contracts and Leases when you want to, and attempt to bind you into a lot more expenditure than you anticipated. Leases and maintenance contracts can be an attractive way of spreading payments compared with paying the full capital amount up front, but the amounts you pay should reflect a reasonable lifetime period over which the capital involved is written off and then should reduce to a cost reflecting the real risk of maintenance costs. The costs of computers and related accessories which are sufficient to meet the needs of many clubs have declined considerably over the last few years, and there is very strong competition in the insurance market to cover replacement costs in the case of equipment failure (accidental damage and theft will normally already be covered by your main insurer). Some High Street stores offer maintenance contracts and replace with new insurance policies, but at excessive prices compared with some direct suppliers such as Dell. For all equipment related to security, you should get a clear statement of all costs that are likely to be charged including the costs per visit in relation to the response time. - And don't forget to read all the small print!
